For me, music has always been an undercurrent. For some time, I was swimming against the current in the direction of an academic life. Taking that as far as I could go, I obtained a doctorate of Medicine. However, all my life, I have always kept my feet in the water by learning everything I could possibly learn about music. Eventually, I decided to dive in and let the musical undercurrent take me where it leads. I offer a unique perspective into the world of drumming, having much additional experience writing guitar lines and melodies. I am currently a member of the original band Glazia, in which I am a drummer and songwriter. My focus is on teaching multiple styles of music, appropriate technique, and polyrhythmic studies for the more advanced players. Most importantly, I believe the student should understand how the drummer is more often part of a larger picture. To give the students an appreciation for this context, I frequently play the guitar during lessons. Ultimately, I believe this helps to develop a more perceptive sense of the music being played. Not to mention, the students usually find it more enjoyable to learn while interacting with another live musician. The center of my teaching philosophy revolves around the fact that drumming is much more than learning how to make a drum set sound good. I believe music is another medium by which one learns how to live. Generally speaking, I see the development of a musician as the acquisition of an acute sensitivity to the world so that one is able to react in a very quick and appropriate way. The ability to do this is greatly enhanced by experience in thinking creatively. These are skills that allow children to succeed in anything they do in life and I am very happy to be a part of teaching them.
